April Playlist

Made it down to the Tractor Tavern earlier this month to see one of my very favorite musicians—JD McPherson, whose music frequently finds its way onto my spin class playlists. Rolling Stone ran a great article about McPherson a few years ago that’s not only a good introduction to his music and career, but that also includes the backstory to the music video for Let the Good Times Roll (below), which is kinda neat.

It would be fun and really easy to build an entire class around McPherson’s music…maybe one of these days. Until then, here’s one my of my April playlists that includes two of his songs, Under the Spell of City Lights and Hunting for Sugar.

March Playlist

Last year Paste Magazine singled out Molly Burch as one of 10 Female Artists You Can Like Instead of Taylor Swift. Last week my Discover Weekly Spotify playlist singled out To the Boys, which was released last fall on Burch’s second album, First Flower. What really draws me into this song is her voice (she’s a trained jazz vocalist) and these lyrics:

I don't need to scream to get my point across
I don't need to yell to know that I'm the boss
That is my choice
And this is my voice
You can tell that to the boys

I’ve been adding her music to my playlists this month (including this one from last week). People in my spin classes seem to like her a lot. And don’t miss video for To the Boys. It’s pretty great:

February Playlist

This month I discovered Margo Price—the best country singer that will never get played on country music radio. She is a Grammy Best New Artist Nominee and the Washington Post recently ran a nice profile of her. Country music is not something my spin classes get too excited about, but maybe they’ll like her for the same reason she’s so unpopular in Trump country. The playlist for my classes during the third week in February is here.

January Playlist

I’m not really sure what Gothic blues is, but it’s how one reviewer classifies the the British band LOCKS. Lately I’ve been playing Skin to kick off my 6am class. The combination of snare, fiddle, bass, church bells and L.Geary-Griffin’s voice makes for a nice easy start to the day. Here’s one of my playlists from the last week in January.
